The Bureau of Indian Standards, acting under the Department of Consumer Affairs, issued a formal notification on March 2, 2026, announcing the establishment and revision of several critical Indian Standards across various industrial and consumer sectors. This regulatory action, identified by reference number HQ-PUB013/1/2020-PUB-BIS (1457), was taken in exercise of the powers conferred by the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018. The notification, published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, details a comprehensive schedule of twelve distinct standards that cover materials ranging from gasket components and Braille paper to advanced acoustics and energy audit protocols. These standards officially came into force on February 27, 2026, marking a significant update to the national quality framework and affecting manufacturers, testing laboratories, and industrial auditors.

The legislation provided: “In pursuance of Sub-rule (1) of Rule (15) of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018, the Bureau of Indian Standards hereby notifies that Indian standards, particulars of which are given in the second column of the schedule hereto annexed have been established on the date indicated against it in third column.”

The primary objective of this notification is to modernize the technical specifications governing manufacturing and testing processes in India. By introducing the first revisions of long-standing standards, such as IS 7714 for gasket materials and IS 11647 for Braille paper, the Bureau addressed statutory gaps that had persisted since 1975 and 1986, respectively. The update ensures that the specifications for Braille paper, which is a specialized tactile medium for the visually impaired, and biogas plant components, specifically glass fibre reinforced polyester resin gas holders, reflect contemporary technological capabilities and safety requirements. Furthermore, the notification introduces entirely new standards for steel sheets used in hot stamping applications and carbon steel wire rods for welding electrodes, catering to the evolving needs of the automotive and heavy engineering industries.

A significant portion of the new standards focuses on acoustics (the branch of physics concerned with the properties of sound) and sound measurement, aligning Indian regulations with international benchmarks. The adoption of standards such as IS 19544 and IS 19546, which correspond to ISO 3743 and ISO 3741, establishes precision methods for determining the sound power levels of noise sources in reverberant fields. These measures are essential for machinery manufacturers and environmental safety officers in assessing noise emissions at workstations and other specified positions. Additionally, the notification introduces IS 19558 (Part 2), providing specific guidance for conducting energy audits in buildings. This replaces the broader 2014 requirements with a more targeted framework for energy efficiency in the built environment. To ensure a smooth transition for industries, the Bureau has mandated that the superseded versions of these standards will remain in force concurrently until August 27, 2026, after which they will be officially withdrawn and replaced entirely by the 2026 editions.
